Recently I've started trying out quite a lot of different types of photography, one of the ones that I enjoy a lot is motorsport photography and have gone to a local racetrack called Mallory Park on a few occasions now.
This weekend I had the chance to go to a different racetrack to go and watch a bit of truck racing with some of the members of Leicester Photographers Club. It was at Donington Park, another quite local racetrack and I wanted to go mainly as I enjoy motorsport and thought it would be good to see how different tracks are in terms of photography opportunities.
We arrived at Donington pretty early, about half an hour before it was due to start and set about looking for some good spots to take photos. Unfortunately, I had heard on internet forums that quite a lot of racetracks are mostly surrounded by fencing and this seemed to be the case at Donington.
Where we first started we we kind of up on a hill and could just about shoot over the fences that were there, but after about half an hour we decided to go and look somewhere else for a better spot.
We went down to the paddock area and had a walk around there for a bit before getting to the other side of the race track and instantly could see that it would be no good as the were still massive fences in the way. If I was just going to watch the racing, I'm sure this would not be a problem really but as for photographing the event, we were pretty much just looking for somewhere close to the track and without fencing in the way.
Eventually we found a decent spot on the infield section and we stayed there until lunch time. We then decided to have another walk around, look for some food and maybe go back to the original spot.
Just as we arrived back at where we started, it started pouring down with rain for about 10 minutes so we made a run for the car and just managed to get in without getting our gear too wet. When the rain cleared up we went out again but after about 40 minutes it started again and this time we decided to call it a day.
It was a fun day out and I may go there again if there was an event that I really wanted to go and see. I would also have to walk a bit more around the track to see if there were any more good spots for photography, but I definitely prefer Mallory Park as you can get closer to the track, walk all the way round the circuit and there is only fencing over a small amount of it.
